    Question Gparted useless?

As of right now Windows has my whole hard drive (80gigs). I plan on duel booting with Xubuntu Dapper 6.06. I want to give 40 gigs to XP and 40 to Xubuntu. The only problem is that when trying to use Gparted (the one that game with the Xubuntu live cd) it doesnt seem to have any affect on changing anything. I will select how I want to resize my ntfs partition to 40 gigs, then i will click apply. It will look like it is doing something for about 10 seconds, then goes back to saying that ntfs is 80 gigs.

i found this one last week. works very similarly to partition magic, but it's free.

i've had trouble resizing ntfs from gparted before too. this one did a pretty good job though.

Just pop the Xubuntu installation disk in : the installer can resize NTFS partitions no problem (I've tested it myself).

Try using this GParted -- LiveCD
    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

I used it a couple weeks ago to partition my HD, pretty much the same; 80GB drive 39Gb for XP, 40.5 Debian, 500mb for swap, took about 5 minutes.

Then I installed with no problems. Oh yeah XP did run ckdisk the first time I booted in to it but didnt find any problems.

I echo what craigevil says. The Gparted live CD has done a wonderful job for me during my many exploits with partitioning. Maybe the live CD of Gparted itself will do a better job than Gparted as an included app within a live CD distro.
