If I understand correctly, you're putting the install CD into the drive at boot, and it's not booting. Here's a set of steps to make sure everything's set up correctly:

    * Make sure your BIOS boots your CD-ROM drive before your harddrive. You can change this in your BIOS settings under "boot order."

    * Make sure you burned the iso to CD, and not the iso, on the CD. Nero has an option to burn a CD image to disk; this is what you want. I remember once I asked my roommate to burn a slackware CD for a friend and when I mounted it to see if everything was ok, there was a single file: slackware1.iso.

If everything's alright, you'll come to a splash screen with the Debian logo and "boot:" will be displayed near the bottom of the screen. Just hit enter and follow the instructions and you're good to go!

Did you download the Debian netinstall from here?
    http://www.us.debian.org/CD/netinst/

Did your burn the .iso image correctly, that is "burn image to CD"?

Caldera DOS is in no way related to Debian.

Can you explain more about that?

Yes, there is an install for DVD. Here is the link to download the DVD via bittorrent (there are 2, but for a standard install the first one will do) :
    http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/3.1_r2/i386/bt-dvd/

Different types of install here :
    http://www.us.debian.org/CD/

You can also install Debian from a USB key (netinstall), instructions are here (I find it works better with Etch installer) :
