apt-get update
apt-get install gaim

Congratulations on your step into a bigger world, Devon. Now it's time to unlearn the ways of Windows.
When you want to install a program, usually you don't need to get it fom the Web. Instead, use a package manager, where you can look up a program by name (and/or description and other attributes) and have it downloaded and installed in two clicks or keystrokes. The Synaptic package manager is great for this.Stand up and be counted as a Linux user!
