KDE lockups in new Debian install

After biting the bullet and repartitioning my laptop hard drive for an honest linux install I've run into the following problem: Debian loads fine and will run gnome without any problems. When I try to switch to KDE (which is what I prefer to use) it starts the login, but locks up on the KDE 3.3 splash screen at the "Initializing peripherals" stage. Where do I go to look from here?

I'm not a complete nooB, but I would appreciate detailed instructions as most of the time these gain you small tidbits on the tools other people use to troubleshoot problems. Well, that and I don't know what I'm doing.

Once it happened to me... but I don't remember how I solved it.

When KDE initialize peripherals, it checkup keyboard, mouse, printers, storage media...

...now: try to check the configuration for your printer (maybe some package is missing, maybe some server is not listening, so you may wait a very long timeout); less probably the problem is for storage media (especially USB devices): maybe you need some daemon (hotplug...)

    You should proceed by exclusion.
When using Windows, have you ever told "Ehi... do your business?"
