Debian 3.1 on Sony Vaio PCG-K23

After using Knoppix for some time on my Sony notebook, I thought I would try a full Debian install on the same computer.

I am fairly new to Linux, so I don't understand why Debian refuses to install. I burned the ISO image to CD from the Debian website. I tried both 3.1r1 and 3.1r2. My CD drive in the laptop is the first device listed in the BIOS for boot. (Also, till I can get Debian installed, I've installed Fedora in the interim.)

The Debian disk boots, and when I press <ENTER> at the prompt, all the boot info scrolls and the "Choose Language" screen appears. At this point, the machine locks HARD. I cannot choose another language, and the machine is unresponsive. Pressing and holding the power button is the only way to escape. I tried the same discs in my desktop machine, and they work properly.

Any thoughts as to why this hang / lockup is occurring? Knoppix works fine, Fedora loaded flawlessly. (Though I have issues with my wireless and Fedora.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello
    Im using the Sony PCG-GRT390Z
It is possible that the sony does not like the kernel version
by default pressing enter at boot install 2.4. instead at boot type linux26
    see if this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I installed a Debian based distro instead. I'm now running Ubuntu 6.06. Everything installed without a problem, and I've since added Apache, PHP, and MySQL for web development - my initial reason for installing Linux in the first place.
