    Unhappy Installation Problem

    Hi,

First up, I'm a complete novice when it comes to this stuff but thought installing Ubuntu would be a good idea and pretty straight forward. I got the cd for version 6.06 and tried to install it on my Dad's laptop. The whole thing froze up at about 95% completion so I tried it again and although I got the initial menu the thing doesn't progress any furrther than next message . Windows won't boot up either and the recovery disc for that stops working when it's "creating partition". Is there anything that I can do to fix this, or is the laptop totally gubbed?

    Thanks

    wee.cloudy,
You said the boot up stalls at an initial menu,I presume it is the grub menu.
Can you please post the last message(s) where it gets stalled.
And,you can use a windows cd and boot to rescue mode and do a 'fixmbr'
to get your windows working again (or) you go use a linux cd (recovery mode),to install grub .(do a search on 'how to install grub')
Did you check the media(cd) before installing.might be a problem with the cd itself.
    regards

hi, the last message I get when I try to start ubuntu from the cd is "Uncompressing Linux....Ok, booting the kernel" then I just get a blank screen and nothing happens.
I tried the fixmbr thing but the recovery disc I got with my sony vaio machine won't seem to let me into the recovery console. It goes direct into creating partitions where it gets stuck.
