Simply change your sources.list from stable/sarge to testing/etch.
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
and that is all there is to it.
The change from xfree to xorg was a mess and a lot of people are having problems with it so be aware of that.

I guess you also have to upgrade the kernel (linux-image and linux-headers) or compile a new kernel before you do apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade.And also choose Lilo as your bootloader.I also got a udev dependancy error it could not be installed....
I am missing something though....
someone please post a how to or a link to a how to for sarge to etch upgrade I tried google but have not had any luck yet....

Why do you think that? Are you getting error messages? Can you post them?

I reinstalled sarge so I cannot provide the error messages at this moment....
could someone please offer any sugestions that I could try out....
When I tried upgrading to etch last year there were no major problems and it worked out fine but now it is much more complex and X keeps breaking among other things....

Uh ok. If you are reinstalling then why not just install etch to begin with. That would certainly take care of the X problems, if any.
Th process I listed is how you upgrade from sarge to etch. Good Luck!

What udev dependency errors are you getting. Have you tried purging udev and installing udev before trying the upgrade process? I do know there was a bug a couple months ago that had to do with udev not being updated. The process to upgrade doesn't change but depending on bugs you may need to correct something before/after to make it go smoothly.

What I can't figure out is if you are reinstalling, why are you taking an upgrade path? Why not download and install etch and forego sarge?
