Installing NVIDIA Drivers

I just installed Debian 3.1 and I am using a NVidia PCI MX4000 graphics card with DVI out.
Im new to linux and have previously only used it remotely through a secure shell client.

I get this far when trying to install the drivers
1.) log in as root
2.) turn of x server
3.) sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7182-pkg1.run

I then get this

No Matching precompiled kernel interface was found on the NVIDIA ftp site; this means that the installer will need to compile a kernel interface for your kernel.

so then I click OK

I then get the following error

ERROR: Unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-soruce' RPM installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' command line option.

ERROR: Installation has failed



can anyone help me on where to go from here?

For Debian you don't need the full kernel source, you just need the headers.
In Synaptic (or the apt-get front-end of your choice), find and install the linux-headers (or kernel-headers if you're running a 2.4 kernel) package that matches your running kernel. Then go back to installing the video drivers as you did before.

thx, it allowed me to go through with installation, but under screen resolution preferences, it still only let me choose between 800X600 and 640X480

Im running lcd with native resolution of 1280x1024 connection through dvi. The graphics card is a Chaintech PCI NVIDIA MX4000.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know the nvidia drivers installed because I see the NVIDIA blacksplash logo on startup. I would just like to see 1280X1024 on my lcd rather than 800x600. This is my first linux install, so I am a total noob, any help would be greatly appreciated

Under the NVIDIA X Server Settings

For the display tab is say my device is the
WDE LCM-19v5

I'm using a Westinghous 19ich lcd. The graphics do look better now that I have installed the NVIDIA drivers, I just want to run at a higher resolution.

nevermind, edited the X11 config file, just type "1280X1024" then restarted X server and its working now
