Anyone tried Debian "Etch" beta 3???
Hi ppl

Has anybody tried Debian "Etch" beta 3 yet??? Coz' I'm looking forward moving from SUSE 10.1 to Debian. I was gonna go for Sarge, but found out that the new one is coming out, so I wanna give it a shot.
If anyone used it, is it stable enough? Does it work fine? Any problems encountered so far?
thanx.

Im gonna go out on a limb here and say the beta version isnt going to be super stable...

Personally, I have tried etch and had some problems with things. It does have some cool features though, Gnome 2.0 or 2.2 ..whatever its at now. That was pretty nice but I had problems with gtk libraries and dependency problems for some programs. Eventually I just switched back to sarge.
You only gave 4 hours since your first post...how much can you expect?

actually i posted my first post yesterday, and checked today, no answeres. I was too curuous about Etch, so I wanted to get some people's opinion. anyway sorry.
Thanks for the info about debian, and I guess I'll stick to SUSE for now, and when Etch is stable enough I will defenetely go for it.

I've been using Debian Etch since January. While it may be beta software it is quite stable especially for an expected release of 12/06. Here is some the latest software listed.
Kernel 2.6.16
Gnome 2.14
Some software if still a challenge to install such as VLC (I prefer VLC to totem or Xine). But overall it's a great OS.

Thanks guys for info above
It's always good to know anything about new stuff. I was always interested in Debian, so may be Etch will be my future OS, instead of SuSE. I know it will be hard for me to configure the system, but i'm quite ready to chalange it.
cheers.

- 08-19-2006 #8I've been using etch for about a month now, and it's not bad. I won't bag it, it's too good for that.

But it works, and works well. DAMN WELL!
Is it just me or does the trayicon option make vlc crash?

been running etch on a fileserver since january, a firewall box since februrary, a dell inspiron 8200 (home brewed kernel) since may and a tertiary desktop for 60 days, no complaints...always nice to get things that are upgraded rather frequently rather than the Sarge (Stale) set (like kde 3.3.2 and the like.) No complaints here...the newer kernels are a godsend with laptops & ACPI...i don't even use the 2.4 any more for install, strictly the expert options -> 2.6 install kernel way for me now.

I'm new to Linux, and after using Ubuntu for about two months I switched to Debian Etch beta 3. It was actually fairly easy to configure , I had a few hiccups but nothing I couldn't fix with a little research and a few hours of spare time.
I'm surprised at how stable it is. I haven't had it crash on me once. I think I'm definitely going to stick with it as my main distro.
