x server wont start after nvidia install
Hi, I've just downloaded and installed kubuntu 6.06 amd64 version sucessfully. My kernel is 2.6.15-23-amd64-generic. I've gone to nvidia's website and downloaded the latest driver ( 1.0-8762 for Linux AMD64 ). I've installed the kernal header files, the binutils package and build essentials package. I have the nvidia geforce 6800 ultra graphics card. The entire install procedure went perfect I turned off X by typing ( /etc/init.d/kdm stop ) then I typed the sh <driver> command and ran the install. There were no errors. Then I edited the xorg.conf file by removing the DRI entry and renaming nv to nvidia.
Now, when I start X ( /etc/init.d/kdm start ) it shows a screen with just the underscore in the top left corner then jumps back to my previous screen where I typed in the commands. X just doesn't start for some reason. I know I entered everything in correctly and there were no errors in the install.
I installed the default ( apt-get install nvidia-glx ) but I really want to install the actual driver from nvidia because I can get the most out of my card that way.
If there is any help anyone can give me on this I'd REALLY appreciate it! Thanks!

The drivers in the official repos are the same drivers, but they may be a version behind right now. Nvidia just released the new drivers today I think, so it will take a couple of days for it to trickle down to the different distributions.
But yeah, they are the same drivers. You aren't benefitting from anything except possibly getting drivers a couple days in advance by using the official driver package.

So the nvidia-glx drivers are pretty much as powerful as the latest ones from nvidia then? I can play a 1st person shooter at 1600 by 1200 nvidia-glx drivers like I can on Windows XP then? If that's the case then great! I guess I thought nvidia-glx was just a default driver from ubuntu and that I wouldn't get the full benefit of my card unless I installed the real drivers. However I'm some older distros when I did get the drivers strait from nvidia successfully installed the glx-gears runs extremely fast, but when I installed the nvidia-glx driver it's smooth but much slower. Also do you know how to enable the frame rates when running glx-gears because it doesn't show in the terminal. Thanks for your help!

Some distros mark the newest drivers as testing or unstable, such as in debian. I think the newest drivers are in unstable.
But yes, the nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel or nvidia-drivers is the same as the official drivers from nvidia, they are just packaged to work with the distribution of choice's package manager.
glxgears in some distros:
orCode:glxgears -printfps
Code:glxgears -iacknowledgethatthisisnotabenchmark

I don't know what you mean by ( i acknowledge this is not a benchmark ) but, it worked the -printfps! Thanks I'm getting over 14000 fps! I guess the driver is decent enough. I do have a new question though. I'm trying to install the 3D Xgl Compiz Eye Candy for dapper but when I apt-get install compiz, it's throughing an error.
Package compiz is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source.
E: Package compiz has no installation candidate
I did through some urls in my sources list but maybe they're the wrong ones. Do you have any clues? Thanks.
