    ALSA sound driver, new OS install

    Does ALSA sound driver come included in the Debian Sarge distro? If not then is there a mirror for the driver other than ALSA's website? They seem to be down just now.

    FYI I am asking in reference to Realtek VT8237.

    Hmm, okay it looks like I have ALSA installed but it just doesn't see my audio codec. How can I point it in the right direction?

    Wierdness!! Now I have the ALSA drivers working and they recognized the codec and I can use amixer to change volume.

    Howerver, system volume is wonky. If I go to Applications>Desktop Preferences>Sound and choose a sound file to play it wont produce audible sound. Also the sound icon on the upper right corner next to the clock wont let me change volume.

    Maybe give yourself user privileges to use audio devices under Administration -> Users and groups?

    Oh, sorry, I meant Desktop -> Administration -> Users and Groups.

    Then select yourself and choose Properties. Then under the User privileges tab select Use audio devices.

    Hope that helps.

    I use GNOME 2.14. Maybe it's somewhere else in your version...

    Ah, I am using 2.4 so that might cause a difference.

    I see that there is an admin folder all the way down here,
    Debian Menu > Apps > System >Admin

    But only two options are available so your trick must be some where else and I will keep looking.

    Code:
    $ /usr/bin/users-admin
    runs me the same user administration program.
