Installed Debian etch and everything is fine till now except sound.
Configured my sound card properly and it works but whenever I restart X or reboot the system the configuration is lost and I ahve to run alsaconf again to make it work.
ps : Can somebody tell me how to stop X in Debian? Tried init 3 but didn't work

I don't really know what to say about the sound card and I'm interested to hear what others have to say.
As for this:
This is probably not a good way to do it, but I usually look up the pid (using ps -ejH) for xdm and then I kill the process. Of course, in some setups it automatically restarts, but on my debian ibook it doesn't start again until I run startx.ps : Can somebody tell me how to stop X in Debian? Tried init 3 but didn't work
