    Monitor Resolution

    Hi.

I just installed Debian Linux on my computer, but the default screen resolution of 1280x1024 is too difficult to read stuff with on my little monitor.... I tried to change the resolution down to 1024x768 and 800x600 (both options in the Display control centre), but I just get thrown out to the login window with the resolution still at 1280x1024. I've tried to change it in GNome and KDE (I'm using KDE 3.5 now) but exactly the same thing happens, so I assume something has gone funny somewhere in the system. Any ideas of what to do? By the way, I'm a bit new to Linux so not quite sure what to do with the command line interface etc.......

    Thanks for your help!
    Matt

You should be able to modify your xorg.conf file to disallow displaying at 1280x1024. Just open /etc/X11/xorg.conf in an editor, go to the section "Screen", and delete the option "1280x1024" from the selection corresponding to your color depth (probably 16 or 24).
Once you restart X, it'll probably force you into your chosen resolution.

You'll need to do so as root, by the way.
