I usually just use one CD and do a netinstall:

It's the best way, downloading 14 cds is not always the best thing. I recently installed Debian and downloade everything with apt after the base installation.

i thought there were fourteen CD's... it just didn't seem right though.
Net install is the way to go for Debian. Thank you

I think there are 14 CDs if you want Debian with all packages. Easier to do a netinstall and just download what you want/need.

You only need the first disc to perform a base install, but it will be exclusively command line until you install a gui.

Ok, lets say that you have a slow internet connection, and you wish to get hold of the CD's via ftp or something (using another computer).
How many Cd's would you need to download (specifically for etch)?
I once heard 5, but I don't know.
Maybe 7 (half binarys/half source)?
Thanks,

This is answered in the debian faq
I would suggest maybe the first 4. Unless you know you are installing some exotic programs

I usually get the first six (for computers without internet connections). If you want system monitor stuff (Gkrellm, for instance, is on disc 8 ), maybe go up a few more discs. There's a pretty good search function on debian's site:
http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/#search
Just type in the package name you want and add your architecture. It will teach you on which discs things appear.

Debian cd
Hi guys
All you need is the base install cd the rest you get off the net, be it over a slow connection or fast.
why do you want to install everything from the CDs when that will only install alot of apps that you don't need,
I have a really cool sources list for atp that does all the updates and builds the app list for you. if you guys are keen its for sarg though.
just mail me at dragonnite0327@hotmail.com
