    Server Security

I am new to Debian. I have just set up a web server and a FTP server. A few problems regarding the security.

    1. What should I do to protect my server from hackers or other unwanted access.
    2. I have a friend whose sever will ban IP addresses automatically. Is it useful? I I want to do the same, how do i do that?

    Thanks
