    How many install CD's

    Hey,

You can get away with only downloading the 1st disk, providing you have broadband interent connection,
and setup you APT then only down load the packages you need,
what will also help is to have caching on your firewall which will help save your downloading from the net

I have ever only downloaded the 1st dick to the Debian installs and downloaded the necessary packages from the net using apt-get

Hope this helps taking the headache away from downloading all the iso's

    How Many CD's

Not arguing with about how many cd's there are, only offering you an easy alternative , bear in mind that their are new package updates almost on a daily basis, so in no time at all your cd's will be out of date and you will need to do package updates anyway, granted that if you have all the cd's you get the base packages from the cd and the rest from the net. I seriously doubt that you would use all the packages on your linux box.

When I mentioned installing across the net, its not like windows where you select run instead of save ,
when running an apt-get it downloads the package to you linux box and from there it is installed , if you need to re-install / setup the package their is a command called dpkg-reconfigure that does that,

If you look at a basic debian install, once installed and you setup APT and run an update the initial download is approx. 20 to 40 megs depending on what u gonna be installing on the box.

I have only ever downloaded the 1st disk and got the box up and running and used the net from there (ftp.is.co.za) which you can setup when configuring APT

ok so what you are saying is that once i get the box(assuming u mean pc)running from my 2 cds which i already have ...use apt get to download new packages and patches etc... once downloaded then install..do i have to know exactly what im looking for.

    Debian CD's

    Hey there,

Exactly right about using your two cd's , when u run an apt-get it downloads and automatically installs thereafter (you can however disable the autoinstall -- please check apt-get --help will give you the switches,

There are a host of debian packages that do similar things available on the net.
goto : http://www.debian.org where you can search for various packages and it will give u a detailed explanation , also visit http://www.aboutdebian.com which has an awesome overview and a couple walkthru's on the various server applications,

you can also use "apt-cache search <keyword of package>"
    eg.
apt-cache search kernel (it will output all the packages to do with the kernel)

if you get stuck drop me a mail

    regards
