    Audio suddenly stopped working...

Ive had my machine in the state its in for almost a year with no problems, till one day I try and play a file and I hear nothing. I opened up Audacity to see if the Line-In or Mic still takes input and at startup it gets the error "There was an error initiazing the audio i/o layer".

To make a long story short, I went into the Preferences to check out the audio settings and low and behold I apparently dont have a sound card anymore or atleast its not detecting it. Samething in all other media applications.

I was running Debian 3.1, but have been meaning to upgrade for sometime. So the first thing I did was run "apt-get dist-upgrade" to see if anything would fix itself. Still the same problem.

So now I'm running what used to be Debian 3.1, now with a dist-upgrade to whatever is next. 2.6.8-3 Kernel with an Intel integraded audio device.

I'm hoping I can fix this, and that my card didnt crap out and I have to buy a new one. I dont have any spare PCI sound cards laying around so I havent tried that...

    Thanks.

    Try reconfiguring your sound card

    apt-get install alsa-utils
    alsaconf

Be sure everything is using ALSA for the output
