stuck in command line, need help booting gui

hi im fairly new to Linux and this is my first time with Debian (used SuSE in the past) my friend told me to get the latest unstable build so i got etch ver. amd64. booted into the gui mode on the net install disk went through the functions and so on and so on. Ok but apparently, even though the Desktop enviroment WAS installed im still stuck in commmand line. I updated xorg but i still ran into problems, then i found that i needed to configure it, tried dosent work. could probably use some help configuring xorg config file.
i need to run an ATI X800 pro (R23) with 256mb of memory on a DFI CFX-3200 DR if that helps any.

What's the exact error message? What video card do you have? What video card driver do you have specified in /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

you could also try getting a basic working config with the command xorgcfg, then later on you can install the ati drivers.

    xorgconfig or xorgcfg should work

try xorgcfg first, it automates the process, while xorgconfig asks for you to manually enter in all of the values. xorgcfg will also set you up with a generic video driver, which will give you basic functionality until you can get the ati installed.
