Using Etch would definitely be a cleaner solution : it is perfectly stable in my opinion and more suited for desktop use.
Do you mean "debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso" <-- download that and upgrade that way with a CD?

I just got the widescreen resolution to work! Although I need to change the resolution manully every time a boot gnome

Although I got it working, upgrading to Etch is still recommended??

In my opinion, yes. Etch is very stable, as it is schedule for release in december. Due to a set of more modern tools, it is somehow more easy to use.

    Yes, I mean this one.

Still, it's your choice : if Sarge works the way you like it, perhaps you should stay with it. I just think Etch is more functionnal for desktop/workstation use.

    Editing in the XF86Config-4

    Code:
    Section "Device"
    	Identifier	"Intel 915GMS"
    	Driver "vesa"
    EndSection

    Section "Monitor"
    	Identifier	"Dell LatX1 TFT"
    	HorizSync	28-50
    	VertRefresh	43-75
    	Option "DPMS"
    	Modeline "1280x768" 80.14 1280 1344 1480 1680 768 769 772 795
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    	Identifier	"Dell LatX1 Screen"
    	Device "Intel 915GMS"
    	Monitor "Dell LatX1 TFT"
    	DefaultDepth	24
    	SubSection "Display"
    	  Depth 1
    	  Modes "1280x768" "640x480"
    	EndSubSection
    	SubSection "Display"
    	  Depth 4
    	  Modes "1280x768" "640x480"
    	EndSubSection
    	SubSection "Display"
    	  Depth 8
    	  Modes "1280x768" "640x480"
    	EndSubSection
    	SubSection "Display"
    	  Depth 15
    	  Modes "1280x768" "640x480"
    	EndSubSection
    	SubSection "Display"
    	  Depth 16
    	  Modes "1280x768" "640x480"
    	EndSubSection
    	SubSection "Display"
    	  Depth 24
    	  Modes "1280x768" "640x480"
    	EndSubSection
    EndSection
That + editing in the 915resolutin file, setting the resolution to 1280x768.
And it also goes widescreen after reboot

Ok I shall certainly listen to your advice then, but not right now I think.
Upgrading to Etch, will that change my config files at all? So that I know whats worth changing before I upgrade.

Thanks you again for everything, now I feel like making gnome looking really good any pointers to give me?

    915resolution on Debian Sarge (XF86Config-4)

Thanks a lot for posting this thread. I have been googling for about two weeks, reading man-pages and how tos and your post was the one to solve the hassle at the end ... Great job.

I'll post my XF86Config-4 parameters for anyone looking for information on a Dell Inspiron 9400 with the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (Debian Sarge) in hope it will save time to others...

    Thanks again.
