I'm running Debian etch release on a comp with 2 hard drives in it.(from different computers i got for free). They are pretty old drives only 10 GB each. They seem to work fine, but the 2nd hd (hdb) which I have mounted as a folder on my desktop for extra space gives a big list of error at boot, and seems to run pretty slow. The 1st drive (hda) also gives a few errors, but not that many, and doesn't seem as bad as hdb.

They said that there may be a problem because my drives are hooked up where I have the master drive at end of IDE cable, and jumper set to master, not cable select. Then I have the slave on the slot in middle(closer to board) set to cable select(had it set to slave before, but they told me try using cable select for both drives). When I set both drives to cable select, only the one in the slave slot(the middle slot, marked DR2 on the cable) shows up. The drive I want as master, which is at end of cable(marked HD1 on cable) does not show up when I put it to cable select, and only when I set it to Master. It is kind of confusing, because I thought that normally the master slot is the one closer to the board, and the slave is on the end, but this cable seems like the opposite.

Have any idea how to fix the errors and get the drive running right? The comp also stops a lot during boot up and I have to restart it a few times before it starts up all the up. After that it seems to boot easy untill the next day. Once in a while (like maybe once every few days) the comp also restarts randomly. There are also some days where it likes to restart randomly a lot.

I have a feeling this is all just because its an old comp, but maybe theres some way to make it all work better.
