ftp connects only through intranet please help!

hi im fairly new to linux.

im running debian on an old computer that i have and i am trying to set up a small sever for my house. i first forwared port 21 to my linux computer from my router settings, then i installed proftp and firestarter and said for it to allow FTP connections. i can connect through a unix terminal on my mac and i can connect through the intranet with an ftp program... once i try to connect through the internet it just connects then stalls and times me out! i dont know if it is my firewall settings or something like that... any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,
    erik

make sure the firewall is sending all connections of that port to your server (at the same time make sure the firewall is not blocking external accessing using that port)

my firestarter keeps blocking something... but i have the FTP allowed. it says

Port: 32797 Source: 192.168.0.100 Protocol: TCP Service: Sun-RPC portmap

on the events blocked connections list.

im not sure how to enable these higher ports it seems to keep blocking them.

    ok

try by enabling DMZ Server to your local ip ( from router's confs, ex: http://192.168.1.1 ), such 192.168.1.4. And of course make sure that you've enabled 21.
