    x64 Debian

    Hi.

I have a 4.4gb x64 debian ISO burnt onto dvd (recent download) That I have been toying on intalling onto my N.L.E. PC as dual boot system with (hack-spit) XP.

    What my question is.....

What programmes can I expect the x64 install to be able to run ?

I'm not a gamer at ALL, so scratch that.

Will FireFox run (or is it called IceWeasel?)

    media players .. XMMS ?

What about Shoutcast streaming ? I ran a computer event twice a year Called Big Bash in which we live stream to the world. Currently we HAVE to use nsv (Winamp) is htere anything available to do that. I mean actually broadcast, not tune in?

Do you all think I would be wiser just to stick the i386 version on instead ?

Seriously though, your recommendations greatly appreciated. I'm getting the extra Hard drive tomorrow to install this on.

Most every software package that's available for regular i386 is also available (and works just fine) in X86_64. There are a few notable exceptions such as Macromedia Flash, WINE, and sometimes Java. For most things you should be safe.

Do I personally think you should stick with i386 for the time being? Yes, and here's why I think that:

Take it or leave it, of course. My strongest argument is simply that you get no increase in performance but run the risk of having problems with certain applications.

    Thank you!!

It seems that my question in the Ununtu forum has been answered here....Im gonna stick to 32 bit on my AMD 64 for now,I need java and flash(unless they can be combined to work in a 64 bit distro?).Another distro Ive read about is usind the debian strain Pure 64 to build a gnome based distro called 64Studio.Their goal is to have a purely 64 bit OS and programs for multimedia use.It looks good so far,but no java(Ive downloaded a 32 bit version for testing on my 32 bit computer, and got flash to work by downloading it in firefox. If this will work in the 64 bit version,I do not know yet.)Definatly worth looking into.Just my 2 cents
