    Debian on IBM

Hey guys - I am completely new to Linux. I have installed Debian, but want to remove KDE3.3, and install 3.55 instead (the latest version as I gather). And also if you would be so kind as to help me install AIXGL,Compiz or whatever gives that cool 3d look with advanced window animations.
    Here's my system
    N1: IBM z60t, 1.99gb RAM, 1.99ghz Intel M processor, 64mb video card.
N2: Dell Precision m90, WUXGA, 4gb ram, 2.16ghz intel duo core, 512mb video card.
Currently I have Debian installed on the N1 IBM system.
    Thanks heaps.

I suggest you upgrade to Debian Etch, as Debian Sarge will not be able to provide you with those (you need xorg 7.1 org better for AIGLX). Also, Debian Etch comes with KDE 3.5.5.

You can either upgrade to Etch by changing "stable" (or "sarge") to "etch" in /etc/apt/sources.list and then do :
    Code:
    apt-get update
    apt-get dist-upgrade
Or do a clean install of Etch using the netinstall CD :
    http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/et...86-netinst.iso

As Etch is at release candidate 1, it is already perfectly stable.

As for AIGLX+Compiz, I wrote a small tutorial available here :

Thanks so much for the quick reply. That's an excellent tutorial, and I will try it out today and let you know. And it seems I need to use my other laptop for the Nvidia card.
    Big thanks fellow Canadian!
Oh yeah and I just emailed another knowledgable friend, who wrote:
Debian is more about stability than being the latest...
