Angry WU-FTP Does Not Even ATTEMPT to Start

I am running Debian 3.1 with the latest available stable version of wu-ftpd (ran apt-get install wu-ftpd earlier today). Tragically, the FTP server WILL NOT RUN for any reason. It doesn't even get far enough to even generate an error. Upon typing "/etc/init.d/wu-ftp start" I get nothing.

    Nada.
    Zero.

Absolutely nothing happens AT ALL. No messages, no errors, absolutely ZILCH.
I am right back at the console line with nothing to show for it. I might as well have typed in nothing at all.

    Any ideas?

One of the first things I tried. It's not running. It's moot at this point. I've given up on WU-FTP.
