    sound problem

    HI,
I am pretty new to debian.
I get an error when I try to open alsamixer that says "permission denied"

Any ideas? I get sound when I run speaker-test as su root from a terminal
I have installed alsa, alsaoss and followed a bunch of other suggestions, but still get the permission denied when I try to adjust volume. I figured out how to play a dvd, but I get no sound

Hi, have you added the user the the audio group in /etc/group?

    This usually solves the problem.

Ive seen some people having to reboot after this change...

Thanks a lot. Adding my user to the audio group via /etc/group worked great after rebooting. I also took advantage of being in /etc/group to add the user to cdrom as well, which solved another problem.

    Thanks again.
