    Monitor resolution problem

OK, I'm totally new and I have no idea what I'm doing. I just installed debian last night onto a new harddisk. However, the first thing I'd like to do is change the resolution of the monitors in the windows gui. I've tried using xrandr but the maximum resolution is still 640x480. Why? Is it because I didn't know the chipset of my graphics card and selected vga instead? What can I do?

    Thanks for the prompt reply!

Ha! If I knew I would've chosen it when I installed the system! I guess I'm gonna have to crack it open and look - or is there some detection software somewhere?
Anyway, if and when I know the chipset, what do I do?

No, I have no idea what the chipset is. even after opening it up and looking. I just want 2d graphics to work, in a workable resolution.
