    Word wrapping in shell??

    Hello all,

I have a (to me) really strange issue. Somewhat recently my text began word wrapping on the shell. This occurs in a tty, in xterm, and even through SSH. Essentially, when I type more text than can fit on the line horizontally, it begins at the beginning of the SAME line again. Thus a very long line might over-write itself. Maybe even more than once.

Needless to say this makes some tasks needlessly complicated. Before you ask, I cannot think of anything I've changed recently to cause this to occur. It could be related to new software, any number of test configuration changes, or upgrades. The system is one of my testing machines, but I'm too intrigued just to reinstall.

I appreciate any help you can offer,

    Thanks.

In the interest of community, I thought I'd come back and say I did eventually find a solution -- I had improperly terminated a color code in my .bashrc. I discovered that, when su'd to root, I didn't encounter the issue; I then traced it back to the bashrc.

    Hi.

Thanks for posting the follow-up. Good observing and debugging.

I find it is often useful to have an additional "vanilla" login to test these kinds of things, root being too special and powerful. It's very easy to do, requires little time, and few resources ... cheers, drl
