    Can't get to X

    Hi
I am trying to install xfce on my debian sarge. i installed x-window-system and then i did a apt-get install xfce4. Now when the I reboot, before the bash login comes up, the screen goes black for 5 to 10 sec and bash login comes up. any idea what's wrong? Do you I need gnome as well?

    Thanks in advance

    S

ps I am running debian on a dell inspiron and I have disabled the graphics accel by editing the xfconfig file (dri, glx)

pss I just removed xfce, installed gnome and installed xfce back on and exact same thing. the screen goes blank and then sit at bash login.

    you might try
    apt-get install xserver-xfree86
    and/or
    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Did it work before you *fixed* the xfconfig-4 file?

*also suggest using etch instead of sarge

    Unhappy

I have already tried that and I rechecked my monitor's sync rates. and no it has never worked, before or after the reconfig of xfree86

why are you messing with gnome? Did x work when you had it installed? What happens when you run startx?

First update the bios, make sure you get the most recent version from the dell website

step two you should be able to go into the bios and set the video memory from 1m to 8m

IIRC you should not need to tweak the config file.

You might try those commands again. Also post any error messages you are getting.

Did not mean to run the thread OT but anyway....
    http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel.../msg00004.html
Says Debian is a couple months behind but that they hope to release in December but as I read the post I just cannot see how they will manage a December release at all.

Are there any error messages? (EE)

"any idea what's wrong? Do you I need gnome as well?"

Why would you need gnome which weighs 100+ MB on top of XFCE4?

Have you logged in? It's hard to figure out what you did.

    Try this:

login: type your username and press the key Enter
password: type your user password <Enter>

    $ startx <Enter>

you should enter the X system shortly afterwards
