    Can't get sound drivers working

    I have Debian 3.1

I have an onboard soundcard on this old p3 an... intel ac97.

Anyway I did "apt-get install alsa-base" (after I had tried modprobe i810_audio and modprobe ac97)

Anyway after I installed it, everything worked fine, except Skype would play back to me really hi pitched (while everything else played fine... played a couple mp3s as well)

I reboot and it gives me an error that the sound device could not be opened and that it will be set to null. Everything isn't working anymore... what am I doing wrong?

Vergil! it works! but after a reboot and I start kdm again, I get the same error and have to do alsaconf again and turn up the sound in kmix.

Wow, it even fixed Skype's sounds, but when I went looking around trying to setup my USB mic (which I still have yet to figure out) it won't play but in XMMS and Skype...
