Network problem after installing etch
Hello, I am new to this forum and I was dubious if postinf this thread here or in network issues. English is not my mother tongue so I am also sorry if there are some mistakes in my message.
Going to the subject, I have recently updated my samsung x20 laptop from debian sarge to etch. I did a network install of etch from the office making use of a 100Mbps network and using the standard 2.6.18 kernel. Everything went smoothly, connecting the laptop to the network through the broadcom 4400 NIC. The strange part of this tale starts once I came back home. At home I have got an ADSL router, and I didn't run into trouble in sarge neither using the ipw2200 wifi nor with the broadcom, though in the last case the NIC gave some errors that seemed normal with the kernel bc module I was using.
When I tried to connect my brand new etch box to the network at home I ran into the following situation which I find utterly strange:
1) Apparently there is no problem starting the network. DHCP works fine and I got automatically an IP.
2) The resolv.conf file looks fine. Testing dns, I execute host to several nodes and it works correctly. I can also use mtr to check the connection to these nodes and the output seems normal.
3) However, when I try to ssh to the same nodes that I can correctly ping the connection is not stablished. There is no warning or error, just silence. I got the following output with the -vvv option:
OpenSSH_4.3p2 Debian-7, OpenSSL 0.9.8c 05 Sep 2006

I have tried to look for information using this output as a guide but I have not been able to find anything interesting or applicable. If I try to connect to the debian mirrors with dselect or aptitude the system stays trying for a while, with no download, and finally failing to stablish the connection.
4) Even better, and more "misterious" to me: using a web browser I can connect without problem and with the usual response time to www.google.com, www.gmail.com and a handful -very few- of other URL's. But in most of the cases the browser cannot display the requested page and, after a while, an error message appears saying that the connection couldn't be stablished.
Being sincere I am really lost now and I do not have many ideas on how to proceed further. I will be delighted to send more information that could help to better define the problem, however I am not really sure what information can be relevant. I have taken a look to the log files to find nothing strange. When booting in XP the network works fine, I can ssh and navigate without trouble.
I will appreciate any solution, clue, or at least a hint telling me what to check, because I really fill in a dead end now.
Best regards. And Happy New Year, of course.

I had the same problem, I decided that it must be a hardware problem, I removed my existing pci nic and went back to my lan onboard, enabled my bios for onboard, Now everything works? Hope this can help.

Problem solved
Thanks for your help. I checked the BIOS but nothing seems apprpriate. Finally the problem has been solved and it had nothing to do with Etch. The router-modem had enabled a firewall that filtered the connections from the linux laptop but not when booting in windows. Who knows why. The key was to find the same problem once a MacOS laptop was connected to the router.
Cheers
Currix
