Need help in apt-get

Background
I am really new to linux/GNU.. However, i hope to use a software called Gerris (engineering software) ASAP. To install the package, i have removed the preferences priority pin in apt and have downloaded a few tar ball packages. After installation, i can barely play with gerris and geomview. However, i fail to install GfsView because of crash and broken packages... now, my sound driver and apt-get doesnt work..

With input
apt-get install
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libgtkglext1-dev: Depends: libgtkglext1 (= 1.0.6-2.1+b1) but 1.0.6-2.0.1 is to be installed
Depends: libgtk2.0-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libice-dev but it is not going to be installed or
xlibs-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libsm-dev but it is not going to be installed or
xlibs-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libxmu-dev but it is not going to be installed or
xlibs-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libxt-dev but it is not going to be installed or
xlibs-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: xlibmesa-gl-dev but it is not going to be installed or
libgl-dev
Depends: xlibmesa-glu-dev or
libglu-dev
libgts-snapshot-dev: Depends: libgts-snapshot (= 0.7.6-061025) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
then i try the apt-get -f install
to fix the broken and crash

Ack! Something bad happened while installing packages. Trying to recover:
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libgts-snapshot-dev:

Fixing dependencies
dpkg --configure --pending If dpkg quits with an error while apt-get install, upgrade, or dist-upgrading try running this to configure the packages that were already unpacked. Then try apt-get - f install, upgrade, or dist-upgrade -f, and then try apt-get install, upgrade, or dist-upgrade again. Repeat as needed. This usually resolves most dependency problems (also, if it mentions a specific package for some reason, you might want to try installing or removing that package)

You can also try:
The following problem arises again and again:
dpkg: Error when working on /var/cache/apt/archives/........dep ....
tries to overwrite ».....« , which is also in ..... package.
and the apt-get dist-upgrade stops.

To solve that one can do also:
dpkg --force-overwrite -i /var/cache/apt/archives/..........deb
Please look at what exactly stands there after... /apt/archives/... and then next:
apt-get -f install

I take it you tried following the directions here:
1.1 Installing and compiling Gerris
http://gfs.sourceforge.net/tutorial/...00000000000000

apt-cache show gerris
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6), libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.10.0), libgts-0.7-5 (>> 0.7.6)

apt-cache show geomview
Depends: lesstif2, libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6), libforms1, libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.0), libgl1-mesa-glx | libgl1, libglu1-mesa | libglu1, libice6, libsm6, libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.0), libx11-6, libxext6, libxmu6, libxt6

dpkg --force-overwrite -i /var/cache/apt/archives/..........deb
this has recovered the apt-get.. and gives following

dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/gts2oogl', which is also in package libgts-0.7-5
dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/gtscheck', which is also in package libgts-0.7-5
dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/libgts-0.7.so.5', which is also in package libgts-0.7-5
Setting up libgts-snapshot (0.7.6-061025) ...
.............................
just another stupid question, why it is needed to be forced overwriten instead of upgrade?

so far, geomview and gerris are working and i have yet processed apt-get or aptitude update/ upgrade due to unstable internet connection.. hopefully, tmr, the program can be fully configured..

Thanks for your help~
