click on 'Show Hidden Files' in Nautilus and open .gconf -- apps -- gnome-terminal folder. delete files and folders in it. try gnome-terminal again.

my mistake. i should write in simple terms. Open your Home Folder ( its nautilus windows ) and click on 'show hidden files' in its Menu.

hmm.... it means there isn't any problem in profiles. something wrong with gnome-terminal binary. re-install it !
open synaptic, search 'gnome-terminal', right click on it and select 'mark for re-installation'. click Apply.
