    increasing resoultion in etch



    j have a p3 750 384 mb mem my monitor is a gateway ev700 video card is an nvidia geforce fx 5500 with 256 mb vid mem. my quetsion is the max res i get is 1024x768. how can i increase it to 1280x1024? or is my monitor incapable of it. in dapper it is 1600x1200

    Please provide more info (kernel image mainly), so we are able to help you better.

    Assuming you are running kernel-image 2.6.* you have the Xorg libraries (standard under Etch).

    A simple dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg will (hopefully) do the trick. An interactive screen will pop-up, let the PC autodetect you settings and when it comes to choosing resolustions for your screen press the space-bar to select the ones you need/want from the list.

    One more thing. You could try xrandr to see if the resolutions are available to you (already). If not follow the above.
