    No GUI Interface

I went through the installation of Debian without any issues. Went through the base-config and chose to install the x windows system, along with the gnome package. I cannot figure out how to start the GUI interface now. From reading other posts here I should be able to start the GUI by typing start x from the prompt. This does not work for me. I get the error "command not found".

    Thanks for any help.

The command is startx, all one word.

    Code:
    startx
If it gives you any errors, post them here.

Hmm.. Are you sure you selected the GUI install? It's easy to accidentally not check that option when you think you're checking it. I believe you had to press SPACE to select it rather than ENTER. I've done that a few times.

I'm sure. I am looking at package installation within base-config right now and it shows both gnome and x11 under the installed packages list. I could just start over. It's actually taken me much longer to research this than it did to install it in the first place. I was just hoping to find out what went wrong and why.

Found an excellent site for newbies like me that walks you through step by step of an installation for release 3.1. In following that example I have realized that I am missing the required package and that I need to download additional CDs.

TechieMoe is correct, you MUST press SPACE BAR in order to select a Desktop Environment. If you highlighted the Desktop Environment and press ENTER, you did not select any Desktop Environment. A mistake I've done myself also.
