    Downloaded Etch; cannot boot!

Ok, so I downloaded the ISO image on my windows system, and burned as an image to a CD. But when I power on the computer, it says "cannot find kernal:linux". Then it says "Boot:", letting me type into a pre-install console. However, when I type in boot.cat, it says "invalid or corrupt kernal". So should I download a different Debian Etch package, or should I put another command into the console? FYI, I downloaded the full CD via http, and it was called: "debian-testing-i386-binary-1.iso".

What should I do in order to install Debian Etch?

    Thanks,
    Brook

Those errors are quite weird, they do sound as if your CD is bad. Did you check the md5sum before burning the .iso ?

Perhaps you can try the netinstall CD instead, so you don't have to re-download the whole thing.

I am going to try the netinstall cd, but I used a windows to download the previous image. Thus, I cannot check the md5sum on windows (or atleast to my knowledge).

I'll post to tell you what happens when I try to install the netinstall cd.

There are more md5sum utilities for windows than you can shake a stick at. Personally I like this one :

Ok I tried running the md5sums on the file, but how do you know if there is a problem with it? The prompt in windows just says 100% and follows with a string of numbers.

Also, I tried the installation again, and it worked fine until it was installing the base components. It then said and error has occured and could not install many of the files. I believe it might have to do with the CDs, so I will try again when I get some new ones. BTW, which should I use to install (i have both), the netinstall iso image or the full cd? Thanks for the help so far!

You simply compare that number with the number you are suppose to have :
    http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/et...iso-cd/MD5SUMS

    Success

Hey antidrugue, the install was finally a success. Debian is working, and can get into Gnome too! I just have a couple of final question to ask you.

    • How do you install packages via Gnome? I have downloaded Enchant (since Abiword and Gnome Office needs it), but it just comes with two tar files (data and control), and one debian binary file.

    • How do you get back into the Debian console, or is the root termanal in Gnome just as good?

    • When I was installing Debian Etch, I deselected the option of having a network mirror(go to middle of page; don't have a direct link) to update the database, etc. How do I turn it back on?

    Thanks for all the help!
