Changing GUI to ANSI
HoWdY!!
I have the GUI interface on an old laptop and I want to change it to a smaller and less resource hungry ANSI type of desktop.
Is there a program that does what KDE or Gnome does but only in ANSI?
The laptop I need to get Agnula Demudi up and running on is a Pentium I - 120 mhz + 32 megs RAM. My brother uses an old 8Mhz Attari to do his midi music performances on so I figure that Linux would be much better that THAT!
This is for music gigs so I need something that won't lag out and/or crash on me or take forever to boot and run stuff. I think by using an ANSI type of display rather than the resouce intensive GUI, it would free up a lot of room for me to run my midi/audio programs.
Also,
I keep getting errors on eth0 at booting because I don't have an ethernet card in this laptop. How do I stop Linux from looking for a non-existent card? Can I disable it from looking for it?
Thankx

Is buying a new laptop a plausible solution?

Lets see... Plan B... It is hard to say, because if it does exist it will most likely be very old. The only thing I can think of, is just running a shell right on top of the kernel with no Desktop Environment.

Shell on top of Kernal ?
OK ... I am quite a newbie at this Linux. I have a great deal of experience in Windows and DOS so I think I can relate to what you say.
I know there is a TXT shell ... I used it when I first installed Agnula Demudi. Then it installed the GUI stuff and all the other programs and such.
Running without a desktop would work if the ANSI menues were adequate. I just need to play audio and control midi sequences for my keyboard. This includes playing the drums, bass, guitar, etc. through the computer audio outs to an amplifier and loudspeakers.
I remember that there were parts of the initial setup screens that looked just like ANSI screen characters. Is there a shell that would work with all the other programs on the Agnula Demudi distro?
Rosegarden, JACK, etc. are all neccessary to my using this laptop doing performances. My brother uses an ancient Atari 8Mhz with 4 megs RAM to do his on stage stuff ... has used it for more than a decade now. I'm SURE that Linux has SOMETHING that would parallel an old Atari clunker!
I appreciate your time and help with my conundrum!
A little further info on how to run a shell on top of the kernal would be helpful. Maybe some HOW TO sites?
Thankx
