SMB Support is not Running - Need network help

Hello all, thanks for the great help you've given me so far.
I'm currently trying to connect my debian pc to my windows XP PC.

My set up is like so:
DEBIAN <=== Ethernet ===> BT Home Hub Router <=== Ethernet ===> Windows XP

In network settings, when I try to enable Windows Networking I get the following error message:
    "SMB Support is not installed"
you don't have smb support installed. Please install ... etc

The main reason to connect these to is I want to be able to remote desktop without going through the internet which is slow (I imagine things would be a lot faster over the fast home network). Would also be great to share files, printer etc

    Thanks for any help
