    Internet troubles

First and foremost, I switched to Debian today so yay for me , been using ubuntu the last few days and decided to switch.

Now for the main problem. I have Internet that's for sure otherwise I wouldn't be on these forums right now, but I can't access several sites. These include, www.ubuntu.com, www.debian.org (a major problem particularly with relation to updates and apt), and several other sites including my university site (which could be necessary). Sites I can access include www.google.com, www.linuxforums.org and www.mozilla.com. So basically I can access some sites but not others. I faced a similar problem when attempting to upgrade from ubuntu edgy to ubuntu feisty.

Thanks in advance to all who can help .

My etch machine can access these sites fine.

Sounds like DNS problem to me. What is the output of ping if you try to ping, say, www.debian.org?

If it says "unknown host", you might try manually editing your /etc/resolv.conf file. Add this line to the beginning (or end) of the file: "nameserver 65.24.7.3". That is a RoadRunner DNS server, I think.

I wonder if this might be an instance of the weird problem I have been having with etch. I've been discussing it here:

    http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/deb...e-problem.html

However, in my case there are only a few sites from which I can't get a response (and they don't include www.debian.org or www.ubuntu.com). I don't suppose you can access this site, can you:

    http://www.ureg.ohio-state.edu/ourwe...nt/bigcal.html

No one running etch seems to be able to access this, though people running different OSs can access it just fine.

I did vote in your thread about that. On Windows and in Ubuntu Linux I could access http://www.ureg.ohio-state.edu/ourwe...nt/bigcal.html. From Debain Etch I couldn't.

The thing is Ubuntu Linux (Etch) can access the sites but Debian Linux can't. Ubuntu is Debian based.

Edit: Although Ubuntu Feisty presented me with the same problem.

Yeah, I haven't had the problem with Ubuntu 6.06 LTS. However, I have not always had the problem with etch either. I think this started some time in February. Maybe it was something in a recent update (and maybe a similar update to Ubuntu Feisty). I should burn a feisty live CD and try it.

Yep, I just confirmed that the problem exists in Ubuntu 'feisty fawn' as well.
