    Question Question about sources.list

    Hello all,

I have Ubuntu Edgy Eft installed and I'm not sure about the "deb-src" entries in my sources.list.
What are these repositories good for?
    Do I need them?
I'm asking because I want to simplify my life---and part of that procedure is that I want to know what I'm doing when I create a new sources.list.

Thanks for any reply or comment.

A repository is a central place where data is stored and maintained. apt-get uses sources.list file to check if a package is available in the repositories.

If you want to update your system through 'apt-get' or 'aptitude' you'll need those repositories and the 'sources.list'. i've enabled all of the repos that came with my install. Also, to install some things you need to have certain repos that come enabled (if you're going to install via 'apt-get' anyway).

i guess i don't know exactly how much you already know about this stuff, sorry if i'm just repeating things you already know.

you dont need "deb-src" sources unless you are going to modify source code of packages. deb-src are necessary for installing kernal source though.
    i would suggest you to generate sources.lst through source-o-matic. un-check deb-sources box.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
