Knoppix, internet connection timing out, need help

I have a Dell Inspiron 2500 laptop connected to the internet via a USB cable connection to a Verizon VX8300 cell phone. I am traveling and using my laptop for e-mail and other needs.

The cell phone works properly under windows XP using VZAccess Manager. But I would like to get it working under Linux as I have had problems with my Windows XP operating system and it is not currently a reliable system.

I have Knoppix Live CD versin 5.1.0 and am able to connect to the internet using the Kppp dialer and /dev/ttyACMO modem device. The connection speed is very good BUT it times out after about two minutes. The other modem device possibilities do not seem to work at all with my modem.

I get a message: "pppd daemon dies unexpectedly, exit status 15"

I tried both Konquerer and Iceweasel browsers and the same timeout problem happens.

I would appreciate any advice that would help me understand my problem and hopefully suggestions on how to fix it.

    Thank you.
