Hi, i am using debian as the base for my mame cabinet, so the first things i started out with was building a solid base system consisting of:

Some asus mobo with 2xslot 1
2x350 mhz p2
ATi Rage128 Pro
Some Yamaha soundcard

Now, i installed the minimal system, not even "standard install" and then i started bloating it up with alsa, and various parts of the X server, and opengl libs and stuff.
So far so good, alsa works, and X kind of works:

glxinfo tells me DRI is enabled, the X log tells me only error is no DFP found, but i recognized that was "Digital Flat Panel" and since the monitor is a normal crt, the xconf is setup to use the ati driver, and the only warnings i get i about fonts..

But glxgears takes 100% cpu, and xmame (compiled with opengl support) runs insanely slow (using opengl, xv and software runs fine), the same goes for ppracer (i installed this to test) the text in ppracer is all messed up...

I tried with 3 diffrent Rage128 cards.. The weird thing is that it worked fine on another computer, so im wondering if i have forgotten anything..

in short: DRI is reported to be enabled, opengl runs hellishly slow.

Here is a dump of the installed packages:
