I have over the past couple of weeks been attempting to get Debina Etch-AMD64 running on a new box. I have had various problems, much of which have been resolved ... but this latest has me stumped.

The box has an ASROCK AM2NF6G-VSTA motherboard with onboard NVIDIA NF-6100-405 chipset, it has a single 250gig SATA, and 2 gig ram.

I have got etch installed and working (up to a point) but I can't seem to get the NVIDIA to work correctly.
I have rebuilt the 2.6.18-4-amd64 Kernel with the NVIDIA drivers (downloaded from the NVIDIA site [i.e. the "... pkg2.run" for AMD64] ); have included the nvidia-glx module; and checked the /etc/X11/xorg.conf has the 'nvidia' driver specified.... BUT.... x wont start (or more correctly GDM won't start) it consistently and repeatedly throws out an Error-11 as it's final signal before dropping back to the kernel shell. However, if I change the driver in "etc/X11/xorg.conf" to "nv" it starts up OK (for Gnome) .. but has a bright pink cast (and increased brightness - lack of contrast) over the entire desktop screen if I run KDE.
Whilst X is starting (and 'nvidia' is specified in xorg.conf) I also see a Warning that 'there is no NVIDIA device for instance 00:0:13 and/or (they alternate) 00:1:3.
I have entries in ../devs/ for nvidia0 and nvidiactl.

I have tried reading the usual google trail of 'error-11' pages for hints ... but nothing yet fits the bill.

If it helps (as a hint/clue) I also have no sound and Alsaconf doesn't appear to be able to load any sound elements. (I am more concerned first in getting the NVIDIA 'sorted'.

Can anyone offer any help please.

Thanks,

UPDATE: Although I have written NVIDIA above and cited it as the problem.... when checking the logs all he NVIDIA elements seem to be there, ... and it seems that the 'nvidia' section (although part of the root cause) is OK and that the problem is with the X server generating the Error-11.

I still can't find anything that tells me what this Error-11 is...... has nobody else ever come across it?
