    It looks like you may have been trying to install Sarge (debian stable). I would recommend going with Etch (debian testing) if this is the case. Sarge is pretty old at this point, and etch will come with a newer kernel. Also, even though it's testing, you shouldn't run into many problems, because it should be released soon (I think). I think installing Etch might be easier for you, and it will probably eliminate some of these problems.
