    Debian Won't Install Correctly

I've tried installing Debian 3.1 r5 several times now on a few different systems with no luck. It goes thru the full installation process with no errors but each time it doesn't install any desktop (kde or gnome). No matter which options I select during install, I still end up with only a command line interface. I'm looking for something like what I get installing Fedora or Suse Linux. Am I doing something wrong?

well, it depends on what you select (desktop or sever or etc...). If you don't get any gui, you can still install it very easily. Just login and do run
    Code:
    apt-get install x-windows-system gnome gdm

Well I've selected desktop environment before...as well as other choices at times. None of the selections seem to install any gui. I'll try just installing it afterward as you pointed out (how would I do that for KDE by the way?). But this also makes me wonder how many other things won't be installed that I'll have to go back and install manually.

Is this the norm for this distro or is there something special about mine?

Yeah, I didn't understand why no gui either. I've tried it with 3.1 r3 and with 3.1 r5 now on two different systems with the same results. I can see it copying files for openoffice among other desktop-like packages but no kde or gnome (or any others for that matter). I'm going to try it again and then install kde afterward if it does it again.

    Thanks for the help.

I think the Etch (testing) installer works a little better than the Sarge (stable) installer in this regard. I had a similar problem when I first installed Sarge (which I think you're trying to install?). I'd also recommend going with Etch because it will be stable (very?) soon and you'll get a more recent kernel.
