    AVG "Cannot open... Update fails...

I just installed Ubuntu 6.10 and am trying to get AVG free running.

There are at least 2 problems.

1 "Update process failed. Sorry you do not have permission to execute avgupdate."

2 It scans 5454 files but reports on all files:

"Cannot open; not checked! Permission denied."

What do I need to do to get AVG running?

    Thank you.

If you don't run a server with windows clients there is no point using antivirus in linux, so my suggestion is not bother, get rid of it!

i agree with valemon. you dont need any AntiVirus package in Linux. check this Short Security Guide for securing your machine in Linux way.
if you want to use AVG only, execute it with 'root' privileges.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
