Problem with KPPP not setting up modem

This is the same problem I had in sarge. I've done searches and I've found references to this problem but no solution. (kinda long)

I use Kppp to dial my isp. I use an internal isa modem (yes ISA). I've used it for years and works fine. I used kppp in Mandriva and it setup fine. Problem is in Debian. This also happened in Sarge and is the same in etch.

I can get into KPPP, I setup my account, dns settings but when I go to configure modem the OK button is grayed out. Now I can go to the modem tab, query modem, it detects. And I click on modem commands and it populates the commands. But the OK button is still grayed out. Only the cancel button is available. So all settings get lost. Now in Sarge what I did is I saved my .kppprc file from my home .kde dir and just copied it to my debian install. Kppp would work fine. but even with the new file it wouldn't allow me to change the modem (OK button still grayed out). Can't do it now because I accidentally reformatted home when I installed Etch.

Presently I'm using links on the desktop to pon and poff and to dial the internet and pppconfig to setup the modem. With this I can dial out. And gnome-ppp is not an optional workaround since I need pap authentication and gnome-ppp is just a frontend for wvdial which doesn't help. I am looking for a fix for KPPP. not a workaround.

soooo. I finally got this fixed. For the first time since I had first run Sarge. Actually this could have been the problem with Woody also. It's so stupid. Mandrake had me spoiled. I had to only name the modem. See with mandrake it had already named the modem so the OK button was there. In Debian Kppp the modem didn't have a name. Once I typed modem into the name box the OK button came back and I could save the settings. Of course I had to hard set the modem since it won't find my modem, like in pppconfig. But if I manually set it to ttyS1 it works. Same with the laptop. So one of the last big probs I had is fixed.

Appreciate you sharing the solution you worked out on your own guy. I'm sure it will be useful to the next guy with similar problem.
