Two simple questions.....

I need to install my vidcard drivers, and I am a total noob, so how do I enter the console and kill x or enter console without having started x?

Also what do I do (under Gnome) to get a list of my hardware (like to when I right click on "My Computer" and click properties, and device manager in Windows?)

press ALt+Ctrl+F1 and execute this

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
