vsftpd only runs standalone
I'm getting used to Debian (came from Gentoo), and I am having difficulty with vsftpd running via init.d on a web server I'm building to replace my old one (ran Gentoo).
Even with listen=NO, it will only run as a standalone and not via /etc/init.d/vsftpd. If I try to, the server gives no response, and no logs are generated. I can only run the program by typing "vsftpd" and hitting return.
Any ideas? I have been recommended switching FTP daemons.
Thanks!

I'm sorry for leaving out that important detail.
I installed it using apt (apt-get install vsftpd).
