This is not the firmware, but the driver, which you don't need. It is already present in the kernel.

The ipw2200 firmware file is called "ipw2200-fw-3.0.tgz":
    http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/firmware.php

You simply have to untar it in /lib/firmware/

Check out the "Wireless Networking" section of this how-to for more details:

Or simply search the forums, as this question is quite frequent.

Hey, sorry to jump onto this thread, but I figured it would be better to ask my question here instead of making a new thread.

I've searched the forums and online for help, but I can't seem to get a concise explanation of how to set up wireless. There's a lot of information on what software to install, but what about after you install it. How do you configure it. Do you make changes to etc/network/interfaces. Do you add things to the module list. How does the wireless-tools commands (iwconfig, iwspy, iwlist, etc) come into play. This is what I'm confused about.

Also is there any way to set up a general wireless connection. I go to a college so there's wireless everyone, but I don't necessarily know the ip addresses, and gateways for all of them. Is there anyway just to scan the air and see what signals are floating around.

    Scan the air!

Yeah there are several programs you can use to scan for available networks. In Ubuntu i use "Wireless Assistant". Since your post is under the debian category i assume you are using debian, and if you have an internet connection you can use, you can open synaptics and search for wireless assistant if you don't already have it and install it from there. There are quite a few other programs out there, this was just the first one that came to mind since I use it more often than the others. I'm sure you could search the forums or on google for more programs to scan with.
