    dimmed laptop screen

I was messing around this weekend trying to get Beryl working with debian etch on an acer aspire 1640. I blindly followed some online instructions, as I know next to nothing about X11. The problem is that now, when I boot up the machine, the screen is dimmed, as if I were running on battery power. Here's the output of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Can anyone say where I've gone wrong and what the solution is?

    Code:
    # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

can you manually make the screen brighter with the Fn + (whatever) keys on the keyboard?

One of your number keys or your cursors should have symbols looking like a sun with +/- signs beside them. Functions are usually in blue rather than the white font you normally see.

I notice you have the composite extension in your xorg.conf twice. It may be doing no harm but I would remove one of them anyway.
